Colorado Places - Legends:
    The Angel of Shavano

Last Update: 10/30/1997 - Jens Moller

Each year the Angel of Shavano appears on Mt. Shavano. The legend is of an Indian Princess and here love for her people. A long time ago, there was no water for the people. It had not rained all summer and it was driving the Indians from the land. The Indian Princess came to pray at the foot of the mountain for rain to end the drouth.

The Indian God of Plenty beckoned and the principle sacrificed herself so that her people could live. Each year, thereafter, the Princess - The Angel of Shavano - reappears and weeps once more for her people. Her tears - the melting snow - fall on the land below and make it fertile.

The Angel of Shavano appears in the late spring and can be seen much of the summer. If you are headed west on Highway 50, and you are headed towards Monarch Pass, once you pass Salida, look to the mountains, on your right hand side. The Angle will appear with outstreached arms near the top of the second peak in to the right.
