Guitars
Often guitars come from the factory without being properly set up. This
involves setting intonation based on the string diameter that you are using
and any tweeks in the truss rod to get the neck straight. It may also
involve 'Crowning' the frets with a file to take care of any frets that
stick up a tiny bit too much. Many local music shops have a luthier or a
specialist inhouse that can do this work for you. Check around to see what
has been done and ask to see some of the shops work before committing your
guitar to them - be especially careful about work on rare or highly collectable
guitars, the work done on these may reduce their value if done improperly or
by using the wrong replacement parts.
A damaged instrument can often be repaired locally. Common repairs include cracks in the tops of an acoustic guitar, Broken headstocks, Random body damage, electronics issues and electronics upgrades. Consult with a local shop if you do not feel that you have the skills to make these repairs or alterations yourself. If you have a rare or collectable instrument, do not change anything until you have spoken with someone who can advise you about repairs or alterations - you could substantially reduce the value of a collectable instrument by making poorly thought out alterations.
Keyboards
MIDI connectors can wear out and need to be changed. Keyboard key machanisms
also fail on
occasion. Some of these repairs are not hard to do if you are careful when
you solder or only require a quick swap out of parts. Most other problems
require access to a service department that can get the proper replacement
parts from the manufacturer. Typically, you will need to look at the
documentation that came with your Keyboard and see if you can find the
correct service centers to ship the unit off to. Many professional
keyboards can be serviced thru the shops that they were purchased from. Be
very careful when opening any keyboard cases - most of the circuitry is
static sensitive and you could damage it far worse than it already is by
simply opening things up and handling the circuitry. Most repairs are best
done at an authorized service center.
